USYSA Region 1 Finals Summary

Bruno United is once-again proving to be a tough opponent as it represents Rhode Island in Maine!  The Boys U-13 team were unlucky to succumb to two very debatable injury time goals as they battled Eastern New York on Friday, June 27th.  However, it was the U15 Boys who pulled off the result of the day for "Li'l Rhody" as they earned a creditable 0-0 draw with Region 1 Premier League champions, FC Delco. A comfortable 2-1 victory over Maine Coast on Saturday followed for the U15 boys, while the U-13's were unable to prevent Western Pennsylvania from taking the points in a 2-1 reversal for Coach Levesque's team.

Coastal Round-up

"Bruno United again?"  That was the comment from the administrator as the boys U-13 team approached the awards tent at Bowdoin College to collect their championship trophies!  A very well-orchestrated tournament during Father's Day weekend was enhanced by some fine Bruno performances.  The Girls U-16 team narrowly missed a play-off berth with a 2-1-0 record, with their only loss being by a solitary goal.  The Boys U-14 team had perhaps the longest road through the tournament and were crowned tournament champions with a win in a double-overtime thriller on Sunday afternoon.  This championship was quickly followed with another for the Boys U13 team, as they won their final match 4-0, having conceded just a single goal in four games on route to the championship.  The Boys U-15 team won three straight games with ease, while the Boys 18's capped their season with a 2-1-0 record.  The girls U17 team gave departing Coach Godbout a great effort while advancing to the championship game with two wins and a tie.  To complete the weekend the Boys U16 team secured a 1-1-1 record that was capped by a superb 4-0 rout of Ajax (CT) in the final game of the day.

U-13 Girls Win Prestigious Oakwood Tournament

The Girls U-13 team went to Connecticut looking to get some valuable competitive fixtures as preparation for the upcoming Maple qualifiers.  Not only did they get that, but they came away as tournament champions!  Under the guidance of Coach Bigwood, the girls secured a berth in the finals with two impressive wins over CFC Arsenal and White Plains and a tie with a very strong South Central Premier squad.  The team arose early on Monday morning to complete the "perfect weekend" with a superb 2-0 win over Western United Extreme.

Girls U12 Team Finishes Season on a High….

With a storming end to the league regular-season fresh in the memory, the Girls U12 team entered the league tournament in Amherst with optimism and confidence.  They didn't disappoint!  Assistant Coach Kelly Gill led the girls to a 3 & 1 record in searing heat and humid conditions at the University of Massachusetts campus.  In the space of less than ten months this plucky team has progressed from an under-sized and shallow roster into a true team with massive potential.

Northeast Sub-Regional Leagues Wrap-Up

The Boys U-15 and U-17 teams wrapped up their league seasons in the Northeast Sub-Regional League this past weekend with the distinction of FIRST PLACE in their respective divisions!  Coach Purcell's Under-17 team ended the season with a 1-1 tie against Yankee United Real, which was enough to see them secure first place in the Red Division of the Sub-Regional League, based on number of goals scored.  The Under-15 team has stayed dominant all season long in the Northeast Sub-Regional League (Red Division).  Coach Daley's squad retained first-place with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Central at Milot field on Saturday afternoon.      The Boys U-14 have played hard and have endured a steep learning curve in the Red Division of the U-14 League.  Some positive signs of progress have been made, particularly with some solid performances against Blackwatch RI and NH Classics. The boys will be looking to end strongly when they travel to Seacoast United.

Boys U-16 End Season in Northeast Premier League

The U16 Boys ended their historical opening season in the Northeast Premier League with two disappointing losses, but can take heart from a solid first-ever season in the league.  A narrow 1-0 loss at the hands of eventual champions, NY Hota and a 1-1 tie with second-placed Western United demonstrates the strength of this Bruno squad, and just how competitive this league is.  Coach Murphy's squad have clearly shown that they can compete at this level and will be looking for a strong showing in the forthcoming National Championship series.

College Night Review

The annual Bruno College Night took place on Wednesday March 12th.  The event was a great success, and was well-attended by over seventy-five players and family members.  Presenters included Mike Noonan (Brown Head Coach & Bruno President), Manda Risden (Brown Women's Assistant Coach) Seamus Purcell (Bryant University Men's Head Coach), and Jay Woodward (Johnson & Wales University Women's Coach).  Each gave a brief overview of the college recruitment and application process, with their own unique philosophy and style highlighted.  All were on hand to answer many questions related to college soccer.  Topics included levels of play, regulation and rule differences between the three divisions, and coaching/recruiting philosophy.
The primary speaker was Ken Murphy, Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Men's Coach at Brown University.  Coach Murphy put together a superb presentation and handout for all of the families, with a in-depth insight into the college process.
If you were unable to attend College Night, but would like to receive more information on any of the topics contained therein, please contact Director of Coaching, Gregg Miller at doc@brunounited.com or 401-473-5153.
